Upstream from Algonac

icejam.jpg

Ice jammed the St. Clair River above Algonac and Marine City ("Home of the Mariners").

The Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinac had just entered the river from Lake Huron and would soon be on the scene.

The view at top is from a spot just north of Marine City and looks directly across the river into Ontario.

In the picture below, we see upriver to Detroit Edison's Belle River Power Plant, whose stacks are in the center of the shot. It sits next to the older St. Clair Power Plant. They're respectively Edison's third- and second-largest generators of electricity.

A bit farther upstream, after the river sweeps around the point, we see the white-banded stacks of Ontario Power Generation's Lambton station (far left), which sits just across from the town of St. Clair.

In the photo above, we see the harbor channel in the town of St. Clair. Signs along the bank warned that under no conditions should boaters drop anchor. No worries about that today. The freighter shown on the right is going to need to wait for the Coast Guard to deal with the ice ahead.
