St. Clair-Bluewater

January 24, 2009

A 110-mile drive from Ann Arbor brought us to Algonac, known as the Water Speed Capital. Beginning around 1915, Chris Smith and Gar Wood built racing hydroplanes and runabouts here, and in the early 1920s Smith founded Chris-Craft to make powerboats for the mass market.

Reaching Algonac, we followed Michigan Route 29 northward along the St. Clair River, which is the 39-mile-long strait that connects Lake Huron with Lake St. Clair.
